You're reading: EU backs decentralization in Ukraine, says European Commissioner Hahn

The European Union backs the actions taken by Ukraine to conduct a reform envisaging decentralization of administration, European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said.

Hahn told a press conference in Kyiv on Friday he supports such a step because it will enable people in the Ukrainian regions to conduct reforms at the local level.

Hahn pointed out that the success of this reform will also depend on the quantity and quality of the local administrations.

When asked by journalists to comment on the statement by Council of Europe President Herman Van Rompuy saying that a way needs to be found for Ukraine to become a decentralized (or federalized) and inclusive country, Hahn said he does not give any public advice and such issues should be decided by the Ukrainian authorities.
