European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“They expressed the EU’s determination in moving forward the
Association Agenda with Ukraine in line with the country’s sovereign
decision,” they said a joint statement released by the press service of
the EU Council in Brussels.

With a view to create the conditions conducive to signing the
Association Agreement, including a deep and comprehensive free trade
area, by the Vilnius summit in November, the two presidents encouraged
Yanukovych to take determined action and make tangible progress on the
benchmarks set by the Foreign Affairs Council in December 2012,
including on the issue of selective justice

The sides also discussed cooperation on energy issues, as well as financial assistance, according to the statement.
