You're reading: Europe should support Ukraine instead of threatening with sanctions, says Russian diplomat

Moscow - Instead of threatening Ukraine with sanctions Ukraine's European partners could provide this country with political support, Russia's Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said.

“The task of those who care about stability and democratic development is not to meddle, not to threaten [a country] with sanctions but to provide political support,” Chizhov told Russian reporters during a video linkup from Brussels on Friday.

“I am not saying financial (support), here the EU, having such a possibility, chose not to do so. So in this sense collating the Russian and EU positions looks unconvincing,” he said.

“It probably makes sense to provide political support to Ukraine’s legitimate authorities. Whether or not the EU will do so – we shall see,” he said.
