You're reading: European ambassadors: Fair parliamentary elections not enough for signing of Association Agreement

The ambassadors of the Weimar Triangle states think that holding fair and transparent parliamentary elections in Ukraine is not the key and the only condition for the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union.

“Speaking about the future of the Association Agreement in general, fair and transparent elections are an important and necessary, but not sufficient, condition for the further signing of the Agreement,” Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine Christof Weil said during a discussion on the main challenges related to the European integration Ukraine in the light of the upcoming parliamentary elections hosted by the Institute of World Policy on Monday.

According to the ambassador, the international observers’ assessment of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine is important to both the EU and Berlin.

Ambassador of France to Ukraine Alain Remy noted that EU representatives have expressed their concerns about the situation in Ukraine numerous times, particularly those related to fair justice in the country.

“They clearly expressed concerns about justice in Ukraine,” the diplomat said.

According to him, the EU is expecting progress in this sphere in Ukraine.

“This [fair elections] won’t be the key aspect for evaluation, but it will be an important step on this way,” the ambassador said.

In turn, Ambassador of Poland to Ukraine Henryk Litwin added that democratic elections are important for further dialogue with the EU, but this does not mean that the document will be signed automatically.

“After a positive evaluation we will return to the dialogue and agree on other details,” he said, and added that there is a number of conditions that should be observed to sign the Association Agreement.

“Further development of the dialogue on European integration depends, first of all, on the determination and activeness of the Ukrainian side,” he said.

The parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held on October 28, 2012.
