You're reading: European Commission waiting for Ukrainian authorities to clear up situation with Tymoshenko

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is waiting for an explanation from the Ukrainian authorities as to what happened to former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The European Commission is aware that Tymoshenko announced a hunger strike claiming that she was maltreated while she was taken to hospital from prison on April 20, Interfax-Ukraine learned at the commission on April 24.

The commission said in its comment that they were waiting for an immediate explanation from the Ukrainian authorities of the situation with Tymoshenko and insisted that an adequate and independent person and the ex-premier’s defense counsel should be immediately allowed to see Tymoshenko.

The European Commission refrained from further comment until it received objective and reliable information.
