You're reading: European lawmaker: Lawsuit to strip deputy Vlasenko of his seat shows inadequacy of Ukraine’s judicial system

The leader of the Greens/European Free Alliance group in the European Parliament, Rebecca Harms, has said that the consideration by the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine of a lawsuit to deprive the defense counsel of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, MP Serhiy Vlasenko, of his parliamentary mandate, is an example of the poor condition of the judicial system in Ukraine.

“It seems to me that this is an even worse example of what the
judicial authorities are doing in Ukraine,” she said at a conference on
gender policy in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Harms expressed her concern not only about the possibility that
Vlasenko may be deprived of his parliamentary seat, but by the fact that
this will intimidate all other defense counsels of Tymoshenko, who will
fear that they may be sent to prison.
