The former chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Ihor Smeshko, has said that there are no cases in world practice of the authenticity of digital records being 100 percent proved.

"As far as I know, there was no precedent in the world of it being possible to prove 100 percent the origin of digital records and the authenticity of their carriers," he told reporters on Thursday outside the building of the main investigation department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.

As reported, the tapes recorded by former State Guard Department officer Mykola Melnychenko were recognized as material evidence in a case brought against second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2005) regarding abuse of power and official authority that subsequently led to the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze in 2000 (under Part 3, Article 166 of the 1960 Criminal Code).
