You're reading: Foreign Ministry: OSCE’s reaction to situation in Crimea and Donbas not effective enough

Ukraine is unhappy with the effectiveness of the reaction by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to the situation in Ukraine and hopes for the reform of the organization.

“We note the insufficient effectiveness of the OSCE’s reaction to the challenges and threats that have arisen as a result of Russia’s military occupation of Crimea and a hybrid war against our country,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

At the same time, he said, with all disadvantages and remarks to the OSCE in the context of the search for a peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine, the organization is important to Ukraine in terms of its unique mandate.

Perebyinis said that the subject of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Russia’s violation of the norms and principles of international law, including the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, as well as the adequacy of the OSCE’s reaction to these events, would be considered on December 4-5 at the 21st OSCE Ministerial Council in Basel (Switzerland). He said that Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin would represent Ukraine at this meeting.

“Given the consensual nature of the OSCE activity, we do not expect after the meeting the decisions that would give answers to these questions. At the same time, we expect that during the discussion the ministers will give an objective and open assessment of Russian aggression against Ukraine and the OSCE’s effectiveness in combating this aggression,” he said.
