The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said it believes that the upcoming parliamentary elections will be a test of democracy in Ukraine and influence the country's European integration.

“We’re confident that these elections will be a test of democracy,” the director of the ministry’s information policy department, Oleh Voloshyn, said at a briefing on Tuesday.

He noted that Ukraine would “turn over a new leaf in relations with its Western partners” after these elections.

“We understand how important these elections are, and the president and the others also understand this. The future of European integration and the way Ukraine is seen by the international society depend on them,” he said.

Voloshyn also said that Ukraine expects that several thousand international observers, including 700 from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), will come to the country to monitor parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for October 28, 2012.
