Head of the Eurasian Department at the Israeli Foreign Ministry Yaakov Livne has said that there should be no anti-Semitic remarks in friendly relations between Ukraine and Israel.

When asked by the Segodnya newspaper how Israel would describe Svoboda’s winning seats in the Ukrainian parliament, the diplomat said: “Anti-Semitism is not primarily an Israel or Jewish problem, but a problem of the countries in which it exists. The issue concerns not only Ukraine.”

He said that the Jewish state cannot ignore such things as anti-Semitism.

“We are closely following the elections in Ukraine and now we will follow very closely the developments and the activities of Svoboda. Of course, the anti-Semitic remarks made by some leaders of this party are totally unacceptable to us, and we hope that after this party gets into parliament, the position of its leaders will be more responsible,” Livne said.

As reported, Svoboda took 37 seats in a 450-seat Ukrainian legislature.
