Paris -- French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has called the Ukrainian aspiration to join NATO problematic.

There are questions to ask both sides (Russia and Ukraine), he said in a programme broadcast by the radio station France Inter.

“Russia is demonstrating either its direct presence [in eastern Ukraine] or indirect presence, via the separatists. This is unacceptable. But I am not sure you have paid attention to the statements made by the Ukrainian side in the past few days; they [the statements] are highly problematic,” he stated.

“Whenever the Ukrainian side says it will not pay pensions to people living in the east or the new government says that its current goal is the accession to NATO, these are serious problems,” Fabius said.
