Ukrainian Justice Minister Olena Lukash has said she sees no legal grounds for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to sign a decree pardoning ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko.

Ukrainian Justice Minister Olena Lukash has said she sees no legal grounds for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to sign a decree pardoning ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko.

“As of today, the Ukrainian president has no legal grounds to sign a pardon decree. This is my personal opinion,” Lukash said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

“Today it is not in the competence of the president and if this matter should be considered, this could be done only on certain terms,” she added.

Lukash noted that the Commission for Pardons under the President of Ukraine had decided that it was premature to pardon Tymoshenko.

She stressed that the pardon procedure should involve a recommendation from the pardons commission.
