The Verkhovna Rada's human rights commissioner, Nina Karpachova, has said that the holding of a court session in the jail cell of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is a flagrant violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and ignores the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, the ombudsperson's press service has reported.
On Wednesday evening, Karpachova visited Tymoshenko in jail and insisted that the former prime minister receive an injection of painkillers.
She described as absurd "the question of choosing the measure of restraint in the form of arrest for the person who is already under arrest." She said, "this practice in Ukraine has become a system."
Karpachova drew attention to the unacceptability of holding a court session in a prison cell, as it is a "flagrant violation of the principle of publicity of court proceedings and does not meet Clause 1, Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as restricting the right to a defense, and can be veiwed as inhuman treatment."
