You're reading: Kerry’s visit still not a sign of possible thaw between Russia and US

The Russian authorities do not think that the upcoming visit of United States Secretary of State John Kerry to Russia signals a tendency toward a possible thaw in relations between Washington and Moscow, a Russian diplomatic source told Interfax.

“I would be too hasty if I concluded that it may be a sign of a thaw
in our relations. Although, certainly, John Kerry’s upcoming visit can
be called a ‘visit of expectations’ and an act of goodwill. It is a
brave step on part of the state secretary because he personally could
come under criticism in his own country,” he said.

Kerry’s trip to Sochi still comes as a certain symbol “because, so to
speak, this city is regarded as the Russian leader’s project,” he said.

Russia has never refused to communicate and has never objected to
Kerry’s visits to Russia but in the past such trips have been cancelled
at the last moment, the source said.
