You're reading: Klitschko fails to meet with Yanukovych

Vitaliy Klitschko, the leader of the Ukrainian opposition party UDAR, was unable to meet with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Tuesday.

Klitschko left the president’s administration after meeting with National Security and Defense Council Secretary Andriy Kliuyev, presidential adviser Andriy Portnov and Justice Minister Olena Lukash, the party’s press service reported. “They said that the president would phone me when he’s free. I am off to Hrushevskoho Street, where clergymen are preventing confrontation,” Klitschko said.

Leader of the UDAR Party said that he had come to Yanukovych to demand he end the escalation of violence and begin to take steps to resolve the political crisis.

“But the president was in a conference. The center of Kyiv has been on fire for two days, and the president is sitting two blocks away and does not notice this,” he said.

“What happened last night when hired thugs acted together with the police is telling. This is the government’s scenario to suppress the protests with the help of law-enforcers and criminals creating disorder and chaos. The violence must be stopped immediately! That’s what I said today to the chiefs of the special forces on Hrushevskoho Street,” the UDAR leader said.
