One of Ukraine's main opposition leaders, Vitali Klitschko, at a meeting with Senator John McCain and other U.S. lawmakers on Saturday, called for "reaction with concrete mechanisms of pressure on the Ukrainian authorities" to stop them from using force against pro-European Union protesters.

The meeting was held during the current Munich Security Conference, Klitschko’s spokeswoman, Oksana Zinovyeva, told Interfax-Ukraine.

The American lawmakers expressed anxiety at violence and mounting tensions in Ukraine, Zinovyeva said. “To stop this, there should be a reaction with concrete mechanisms of pressure on the Ukrainian authorities,” she quoted Klitschko, who is leader of the UDAR party, as saying.

She said Klitschko had also met with European Union Council President Herman Van Rompuy.
