You're reading: Kuchma campaigns for Yanukovych as president of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk, February 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Former President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma (1994-2004) has said he supports candidacy of the Regions Party leader Victor Yanukovych for the head of the state.

"I have arrived to campaign for Victor Yanukovych," he said at a press conference in Dnipropetrovsk on Feb. 3.

"At present a peculiar situation has occurred that prompted me to come out of the shadows. In 2004, Yanukovych was the only legally elected president of Ukraine, but the West did everything so as to put in its own person. IN the end, the United States didn’t help, and the leaders of the ‘Orange Revolution’ failed to fulfill their programs. Our structure of power has been completely destroyed. Losses in the industry total Hr 17 billion, VAT non-reimbursement totals Hr 20 billion," Kuchma said.

According to Kuchma, politicians who will bring stability have to be elected in Ukraine.
