A lawyer of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, Ihor Fomin, has suggested that the authorities are building such a strategy of prosecution which is likely to result in a conviction of his client.
"Of course, I suppose, that the authorities have built the axiom in such a way as to produce a guilty verdict. They use such techniques that suggest that the authorities will do everything possible to bring in a guilty verdict," Fomin said at a round table meeting on the system of justice in Ukraine.
Fomin has once again stressed that the defense will do everything so that Lutsenko be acquitted, since the former minister had committed no crime.
The lawyer also noted that it is not right to talk about the possibility of amnesty of Lutsenko, since the ex-minister considers himself a political prisoner, and not a criminal.
Lutsenko has been held in jail since Dec. 26, 2010.
Kyiv Court of Appeals on April 21 extended Lutsenko’s arrest until May 26, and after that he announced his intention to go on hunger strike from April 22.
On Sept. 1 Lutsenko’s defense team and family claimed that his health and life were in danger.
At a press conference his wife said that he had been diagnosed with cryptogenic cirrhosis, which could lead to cancer if not treated.
