You're reading: Moroz admits coalition with Regions Party, Communist Party was a mistake

Leader of the Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU) Oleksandr Moroz has said that the formation of a coalition with the Our Ukraine Party and the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (BYT), as well as further unification into a coalition with the Regions Party and the Communist Party of Ukraine was a mistake.

“Time has passed and I am analyzing the course of political events
five years ago and the current situation in the state. And I have to
declare the following thing – the oppositional party SPU could not and
cannot form a coalition with business parties. They are similar despite
their competition. That’s why the attempt to form a coalition with Our
Ukraine and BYT in 2006, as well as a coalition with the Regions Party
and communists was a mistake. This mistake is only my fault. I am asking
my party mates and those who believe in our party to forgive me,” reads
a statement posted on the Web site of the SPU on Monday.

“The country is in danger. Unemployment is prevailing. Businesses are
hiding in shadows. The budget is being embezzled. Rights of veterans,
pensioners, people that were born in the years of the Second World War,
Chornobyl cleanup workers, and families having many children are
suffering disrespect. There are no prospects for young people. There
exists a threat of losing statehood due to sales of land. Rural areas
are decaying. The society is being consciously split by the language
problem,” Moroz said.

He added that he “consciously gave up the leadership of the party, as
consistent fight for better life for people, for social fairness
requires new fair and energetic leaders.”

“Today the SPU is running for the Verkhovna Rada without
time-servers, lead by ambitious and promising politician Petro Ustenko. I
am completely entrusting him the leadership,” Moroz said and called on
the voters to support the SPU and its candidates in majority
constituencies.

As reported, earlier Moroz expressed hope that the SPU would overcome
the election threshold at the parliamentary elections on October 28,
2012. He decided to run for the parliament in a majority constituency.
