You're reading: Opposition leader: Court ruling represents another blow against media freedom

Opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko said the Aug. 30 decision of the Kyiv Administration Appeals court voiding broadcast licenses awarded to two independent television channels, TVi and Channel 5, represents another blow against media freedom in Ukraine.

In a statement posted to her website, Tymoshenko said: "Yanukovych, using the hands of Ukraine’s new KGB, has stolen the chance for TVi and Channel 5 to report the truth, thus depriving society from learning the truth." She called the court ruling "especially cynical" in light of the fact that the verdict was handed down as President Viktor Yanukovych was in Berlin promising German leaders to uphold media freedoms.
