The opposition has challenged in court the election of Valeria Lutkovska as parliament’s human rights commissioner because of the flagrant violations of law and wants to prevent her from taking the oath.

BYT-Batkivschyna faction member Yuriy Odarchenko announced this at a press briefing on Thursday, April 26 the press service of the Batkivschyna Party reported.

"In order to make political repression closed, the government is doing everything to destroy the institution of ombudsperson and appoint as ombudsman a person who will follow the instructions of the presidential administration," Odarchenko said.

He said that the vote for the election of a new commissioner was held in gross violations of the law.

Odarchenko said that this had been confirmed by members of the parliament’s counting commission, "from the words of whom it is clear that the ballot papers were copies, rather than freshly stamped sheets of paper."

"Voting took place with the use of illegal ballots," he said.

Odarchenko also tabled in parliament a draft resolution on the cancelation of Lutkovska’s election as Verkhovna Rada human rights commissioner.

"This is an additional necessary step in the process of appealing against the election of Valeria Lutkovska in court and a means to prevent her from taking the oath in the Verkhovna Rada," the party’s press service quoted him as saying.
