You're reading: Overwhelming majority of Ukrainians support universal presidential election

Some 90% of Ukrainians believe the president must be elected in a universal ballot, representatives of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology told a Friday press conference in Kyiv.

A total of 2,043 respondents were polled in 111 towns and cities
across Ukraine from Sept. 18 through Oct. 4. The error is under
2.2%.

Some 90.3% of the respondents said that Ukrainians must elect their
president in a nationwide ballot, and only 2.1% argued that the
president must be elected by the Verkhovna Rada.

A total of 3.5% said Ukraine did not need the president and the presidential position should be abolished.

Some 4.1% were unable to answer the question.
