The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, on Wednesday will hear a report by the Prosecutor General's Office on criminal cases opened against former Ukrainian Prime Minister and leader of the Batkivschyna All-Ukrainian Union Yulia Tymoshenko.

Some 251 MPs voted for a relevant resolution on Tuesday.

At the same time, The MPs did not support a proposal that Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka report on this matter.

BYT-Batkivschyna faction leader Ivan Kyrylenko before the vote said that Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka himself should make the report in parliament.

Only 122 MPs voted for this proposal.

After the resolution was approved, the whole of the BYT-Batkivschyna faction left the parliament’s session hall in protest.

The approved document includes no information about who from the Prosecutor General’s Office is to report on the cases against Tymoshenko, but in parliament lobby MPs said that most likely First Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin would report on this issue.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office in April 2011 opened a criminal case against Tymoshenko on charges of abuse of power in the conclusion of 2009 gas contracts.

The Prosecutor General’s Office believes that by signing the 2009 gas contracts with Russia, Tymoshenko inflicted damage to the state in an amount of over Hr 1.5 billion.
