Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna has said that his country is ready to participate in talks in the so-called Weimar format on the settlement of the situation in Donbas, Polskie Radio reported on Nov 19.

He said in his comments after a meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin that “a Polish-German assessment is common when the issue concerns the assessment of the situation, as well as sanctions [against Russia].”

Schetyna noted that the proposal to return to the Weimar format involving Germany, France and Poland had been put forward by Ukraine’s Presidential Administration.

He recalled that joint actions by Warsaw, Berlin and Paris in February this year had helped prevent bloodshed in Kyiv and expressed hope that France would also support the idea of the Weimar format to resolve the situation in eastern Ukraine.

As reported, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at a meeting in Kyiv on November 18, discussed the possibility of the so-called Weimar format of talks on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine’s eastern regions.

“As part of international efforts on peaceful settlement the sides agreed on the expediency of using various multilateral formats of talks, which lead to a ceasefire, the withdrawal of troops and equipment [from Ukrainian territory] and the release of hostages. In particular, in addition to the Geneva and Normandy formats, there was a proposal to organize the so-called Weimar format with the participation of Germany, Poland and France,” the press service of the Ukrainian president reported.
