Poll: Yanukovych's rating drops to Yushchenko's level in middle of term

Public support for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has dropped by three times as of the middle of the president's term, and the number of people unsatisfied with his performance has doubled, according to the results of a poll conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation along with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center.

According to a posting on the Web site of the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia Ukraine weekly, 12.6% Ukrainians completely support Yanukovych, while 47% people don't. The same poll in May 2010 showed that 40% Ukrainians supported Yanukovych, while 23% respondents opposed him.

Thus, the population's support of the incumbent president has dropped by three times, while the number of his opponents has doubled.

Third Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko also lost supporters by the end of his presidential term. In particular, in February-May 2005 some 47% respondents supported him, while 27% didn't. In the middle of his presidential term, Yuschenko had 15% support and 49% opposed.

In addition, the poll showed that Ukrainians don't approve of the principles of work of the parliament and the government. Only 4% respondents completely support the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, and 7% support the Cabinet of Ministers, while 54% and 48% respectively oppose the parliament and the government.

While this most recent poll is significant it is also much more than a snapshot in time. It underlines a trend that clearly shows a steady decline in the support for the Party of Regions since the spring of this year. Just to make matters worse, Yanukovych recently gambled and lost when he recently tried to strike a deal with Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Sochi hoping that the Russians would stand behind him in his battle with the Opposition. One can only wonder if all that Volodya would offer him was a plate of egg souffle for breakfast. Finally there is the neverending saga of Yulia Tymoshenko. With the ECHR now being involved in conjunction with the Council of Europe, Vitya has another continuing migraine to deal with. If he does get to sleep, orange cats and clucking hens in his Mezhyhirya compound will not be a welcome addition to his nightmares.

Considering the mid-term track record - escalated corruption, deteriorated business climate, economic mismanagement, increasingly biased and propagandistic national media, parliament turned into a rubber-stamp institution, politization of the judiciary, stalinist show trials, political prisoners, international disgrace with pariah status of the president himself, cleptocracy, amassing of obscene luxury for Yanukovych and his family - a 12.6% support is surprisingly and undeservedly high. Meow, meow, meow.
