You're reading: Poroshenko hopes attackers on French magazine Charlie Hebdo will soon be punished

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he hopes that those who attacked the Paris office of French magazine Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7, killing 12 people, will soon be brought to justice. 

“We hope that this operation will be completed very quickly and that terrorists will be brought to justice,” he told reporters after making a note in the book of condolences at the French Embassy in Kyiv on Friday.

Poroshenko said he wanted to express his sorrow, solidarity and unity with the people of France and all of Europe in the fight against terrorism, as everyone in Ukraine is very well aware of the harmfulness of this phenomenon.

He also noted that he was struck by the solidarity with which the French took to the streets due to this terror attack, as well as to demonstrate their readiness to fight for their rights and freedoms, in particular, freedom of speech.

Poroshenko said that Ukraine was grateful to France for the support it provides in the current difficult situation.

The head of state also laid a wreath in memory of those killed in Paris.

The office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in downtown Paris was attacked early on Jan. 7. According to the latest reports, twelve people, among them eight journalists, were killed.
