You're reading: Poroshenko nominates Shokin for post of prosecutor general instead of dismissed Yarema

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has asked Verkhovna Rada to uphold his decision to dismiss Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaliy Yarema and appoint Viktor Shokin instead.

The respective draft resolutions have been registered at Verkhovna Rada on Feb. 10 morning.

The president is expected to come to the parliament soon to present his decisions to the parliamentarians.

Under the Constitution of Ukraine, the president appoints and resigns prosecutor general after agreement of Verkhovna Rada.

On June 18, 2014 Poroshenko offered Verkhovna Rada to give consent for appointment of first deputy premier Vitaliy Yarema for the post of prosecutor general.

On June 19, the parliament accepted president’s proposal to appoint Yarema as Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

Shokin is first deputy prosecutor general.

He has been working as an investigator for especially important cases at the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine since 1998. He chaired the investigation of the criminal cases opened against General Oleksiy Pukach, who was convicted of the homicide of journalist Georgy Gongadze.

Besides, he also carried investigations into the criminal cases against Borys Kolesnikov, Yevhen Kushanriov and Ihor Kolomoisky.

From 2002 to 2003, and since 2004 has been working as deputy prosecutor general.
