You're reading: Poroshenko optimistic about settlement of situation in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that he is optimistic in the issue of the speedy settlement of the situation in Ukraine's eastern regions.

“I am an optimist. I think that we will soon expect positive news, because all the steps that have been taken by our partners are quite decisive,” he told reporters during his visit to Moldova on Thursday.

Otherwise, Poroshenko said, the policy of sanctions will continue, “not to harm any of the countries, but to ensure compliance with obligations, the Minsk agreements.”

He also thanked foreign countries for their support and solidarity with Ukraine in this conflict.

“We have a direct military confrontation, including with the participation of regular Russian troops. I am grateful to the world, our European partners and representatives of the Group of Seven for their very strong position and solidarity with Ukraine, which helps us have at our disposal a huge number of formats: Normandy, Geneva, Weimar, Visegrad and other formats that allow different countries to show their solidarity with Ukraine and show their willingness to help Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.
