You're reading: Poroshenko says government’s resignation decided by coalition

It is the parliamentary coalition which initiates the resignation of the Ukrainian Cabinet, said President Petro Poroshenko, while noting that he had no information as to whether such processes were underway.

“The government resignation is a matter for the coalition, just like the government appointment. The president only proposes what has been proposed to him by the coalition, although change in government is a certain destabilizing element. I am not aware of any current government-replacing processes. I am being frank with you: I have no such information,” he said in an interview on the Channel 5 television on Sept. 6 evening.

When asked about a conflict between Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Odesa regional administration head Mikheil Saakashvili, the president said it was based on both sides’ dissatisfaction with the pace of reforms in Ukraine and had nothing personal about it.

“The first position reflects the dissatisfaction with the pace and depth of the reforms taking place in Ukraine. People have this dissatisfaction, I as the president have this dissatisfaction, and I have said so publicly in my address to Verkhovna Rada, the prime minister have this dissatisfaction, and so does the head of the Odesa regional administration, Saakashvili. Without exempting anyone, including myself, from the responsibility, I want to stress: there is no inter-personal conflict between the premier and Mikheil Saakashvili,” the president said.

“Both the prime minister and Mikheil Saakashvili want to rectify the situation. I am not sure whether these reforms will be efficient and the situation improved by way of bringing this discussion into public domain. But I insist that we must do our utmost to ensure a united and efficient team play. There will be no victory without it,” Poroshenko said.
