Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has conveyed his thanks to the U.S. Congress for its initiative to grant Ukraine major non-NATO ally status.

“It will allow us to receive new opportunities for cooperation with the United States, and enhance our security,” the president said during his meeting with U.S. Senator Robert Menendez in Kyiv on Sept. 1.

Besides, the head of state said that he intends to raise the issue of recognizing the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republics as terrorist organizations in the course of his visit to the United States.

The president also informed the senator about the escalation of the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions due to the aggression against Ukraine.

Poroshenko noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had made significant progress in countering the terrorists until the Russian army intervened.

“It is crucially important for Ukraine to receive assistance in its struggle for freedom, democracy and sovereignty,” the president said.

Moreover, Poroshenko said he planed to visit the NATO Summit in Wales, where he intends to hold negotiations with leaders of NATO member-states on the coordination of their future actions.

In his turn, Senator Menendez said: “These events threaten not only Ukraine, but also the entire world. The first victims are the people of Ukraine, but they are not the only victims. This is an issue of global security.”
