Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said fortifications must be built around Mariupol.

“What you are doing today is very important for the city and for the country. We must defend the city and build fortifications. My meetings with law enforcement officials are devoted to this particular issue. We must be prepared for treacherous violations of the ceasefire,” Poroshenko said at a press conference in Mariupol on Sept. 8.

Poroshenko also said that because information was released in advance about his visit, the enemy launched a shelling attack on the checkpoint and his security service recommended that the visit be interrupted.

“A posting on the Web site of Donetsk Regional State Administration said in advance that Poroshenko was arriving in Mariupol, so everyone would know. However, they announced an earlier time, 1:30 p.m., two hours before my arrival. The artillery attack began exactly at 1:30 p.m.,” Poroshenko said.

“But I am saying this: we did the right thing. We must show that we are not afraid of them. The president’s place is here in this situation,” the Ukrainian president said.
