The committee of voters of Ukraine is opposed to the decision by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to cancel local government elections set for May 30, 2010, reads a statement by the committee, the text of which was also sent to Interfax-Ukraine.
"Understanding all of the difficulties regarding the proper preparation and holding of the next local elections in May, the committee of voters of Ukraine nevertheless states that their cancellation without the appointment of a new date directly violates the Constitution of Ukraine," reads a statement by the committee.
The committee noted that according to the Constitution, the term of authorities of city, town and village heads, as well as members of local councils is four years.
"That’s why unconstitutional attempts to prolong the authorities of officials in local government must be considered as attempts by representatives of certain political forces to usurp power," says a statement.
According to representatives of the committee, having voted for this resolution "the majority of MPs demonstrated a peak of political cynicism, as first the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine didn’t fulfill its constitutional obligations and didn’t adopt the state budget of Ukraine for 2010, and then it used this as a reason for the unconstitutional prolongation of the authorities of the agencies of local government."
That’s why the committee of voters of Ukraine urged MPs in the near future to adopt the state budget and appoint a new date of local election that will "reduce as much as possible the term of unconstitutional authorities of members of local councils and city, town and village heads."
