You're reading: Progressive Socialists reelect Vitrenko as party leader

The Progressive Social Party reelected Natalia Vitrenko as party leader on June 26, the party's press-service announced. The 25th party congress with 236 delegates out 268 took place on June 26. Volodymyr Marchenko and Olha Solovenko were elected deputy party leaders.

The congress approved a number of resolutions in particular, Through Common Economic Space with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, Through Customs Union to Interstate Union. This is a saving path prompted by the will of Ukrainian people and rational pragmatism; Stop Living Under Dictation of the International Monetary Fund; No Yanukovych – Azarov’s Misanthropic Pension Reform; Concerning Crisis in Ukraine’s Left-Wing Movement and Ways Out of It; We Demand Ukrainian Leadership To Protect Legitimate Rights of Transdniestrians.

The congress sent an appeal to President Viktor Yanukovych for his fulfilling election pledges on Ukraine’s full-scale entry in the Common Economic Space and the Customs Union; protection of non-aligned status of Ukraine; abolition of NATO exercises in Ukraine; giving the Russian language status as official language along with Ukrainian; annulment of former President Viktor Yushchenko’s decrees on awarding the title of Hero of Ukraine.

The party congress also asked the president to provide access of the Progressive Socialist Party to television and radio broadcasting.

The congress also agreed two petitions: Stop drawing Ukraine into NATO. Denounce Unites State-Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership; and USA, Israel, Hands off Iran!

As Ukrainian News reported, the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine supported Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych in the runoff presidential election.
