You're reading: Prosecutor General’s Office assured ambassadors of readiness to assist in Tymoshenko’s examination by foreign doctors

The deputy prosecutor generals, Yevhen Blazhivsky and Anatoliy Pryshko, have informed the ambassadors and representatives of foreign diplomatic missions to Ukraine about the case against former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko on the illegal activities of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (EUSU) corporation and assured that PGO is ready to assist in the organization of joint commission of doctors to conduct an independent examination of ex-premier.

"Deputy Prosecutor General Yevhen Blazhivsky fully informed those present about the criminal case on the employees of the UESU corporation, which was managed by Tymoshenko in 1996-1999. In particular, [the case is connected with] evidence of the embezzlement of state funds, the evasion of taxes, the illegal reimbursement of VAT worth over Hr 30 million and a number of other facts," the media liaisons department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) reported on Wednesday.

Representatives of the PGO said they were ready to assist in the organization of the work of a joint commission of doctors to conduct an independent examination, diagnostics and treatment of Tymoshenko.

One of the diplomats informed the PGO that two doctors from Germany and three from Canada were ready to join the group of international experts for Tymoshenko’s treatment.

According to a source, a representative of PGO said that Ukraine is ready to host foreign doctors and create all necessary conditions for them.

In addition, the PGO hopes that the foreign doctors will arrive in Ukraine as soon as possible.

"We want to provide Tymoshenko with the necessary medical aid, in particular involving foreign experts and all of the necessary equipment," the source said, citing the PGO representative.

"In addition, the sides stressed the importance of bringing Ukraine’s criminal justice system in line with European standards, in particular, adopting a new criminal procedure code as a necessary legal tool," reads the statement.

Ambassador of the United States John Tefft, Ambassador of Canada Troy Lulashnyk, British Ambassador Leigh Turner, Austrian Ambassador Wolf Dietrich Heim, Greek Ambassador Georgios Georgountzos, Ambassador of Switzerland Christian Schoenenberger, and Spanish Ambassador Jose Moyano attended the meeting. In addition, representatives from the diplomatic missions of Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Russia and the EU were present at the meeting.

As reported, the Investigatory Department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kharkiv region has finished its investigation into a criminal case against former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko on the activity of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU) corporation.

"Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko is accused of evading taxes worth over Hr 4.7 million, embezzlement, and an attempt to embezzle budget funds via the illegal repayment of over Hr 25 million in value added tax, official forgery and evading the payment of UAH 681,000 in income tax. The budget funds were embezzled via concealing foreign currency earnings of the UESU corporation at offshore companies," the press service of the SBU reported.

The accused and her defense team have started reading the materials of the case. The prosecution agencies filed a civil lawsuit on the reimbursement of losses of the state in this criminal case.

The investigation into other crimes, including tax evasion of an amount over Hr 10 million and an attempt to embezzle property that belongs to others – $405.5 million in national budget funds – continues.
