Kharkiv – The need to conduct a medical examination of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been triggered by her constant failure to appear in court, as well as the need to ensure the consideration of the case within a reasonable time, State Prosecutor Maryna Kapinos has said.

“Given the fact of the defendant’s absence at court sessions, and taking into account the need to observe a reasonable timeframe for the consideration of the case, the need has arisen to study the question of the state of her health, and the possibility of her participation in court sessions in future,” Kapinos said at a briefing on Monday at the Court of Appeal of Kharkiv region, where the Kyivsky District Court of Kharkiv is considering the UESU case.

The state prosecutor also noted that the petition lodged by the Prosecutor General’s Office meets the requirements of the law and the trial stage.

Asked why she was dissatisfied with the medical certificates provided by doctors from the Berlin-based Charite Clinic, Kapinos said: “In accordance with the requirements of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, only the findings of a medical examination, given by qualified doctors, can be objective data.”
