The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has refused to release from custody former Interior Minister and leader of the People's Self-Defense Party Yuriy Lutsenko against bail put up by members of the Verkhovna Rada, the party's press service reported.

According to the press service, Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin has sent a letter reporting the refusal to release Lutsenko on bail to Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction member Yuriy Hrymchak, who filed a request signed by some 100 deputies to the Prosecutor General to bail out Lutsenko and former Environmental Protection Minister Heorhiy Filipchuk.

Referring to the conclusions by Pechersky District Court, the PGO said that Lutsenko and Filipchuk might hinder the inquiry into their cases and attempt to flee the investigation and trial.

"These judicial decisions indicate that at liberty Lutsenko and Filipchuk will not fulfil the procedural decisions and will be able to evade the investigation and trial, and your warranty will not guarantee their proper behaviour," the press service of the People’s Self-Defense Party said, quoting Kuzmin’s letter.
