You're reading: Prosecutors threatening Tymoshenko with arrest, says Batkivschyna party

The Batkivschyna party has said that the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office has resorted to ungrounded threats of arrest against their leader and ex-Premier of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko.

"On the one hand, they [the Prosecutor General’s Office] are unable to prove any, even the slightest guilt of Tymoshenko in the fabricated pseudo criminal cases against her. On the other, they are in panicked fear of [President Viktor] Yanukovych, because they are unable to execute his order: to convict Yulia Tymoshenko as soon as possible, in order to prevent her participation in the parliamentary elections of 2012," the party said in a statement posted on its Web site in response to the warning by Deputy Procurator General of Ukraine Renat Kuzmin that the pre-trial restrictions against Tymoshenko may be toughened and changed to arrest.

The party also said that "… Yanukovych’s regime has consistently pursued a policy of destroying the opposition in Ukraine."
