You're reading: Rada vote down bill on fight against bribe taking

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has voted down a bill proposing to amend some laws of Ukraine on the fight against bribe taking.

Only 104 of the 371 MPs registered in the hall voted for the bill at first reading.

The author of the document, Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense MP Anatoliy Hrytsenko, proposed to lower the limits defining an especially big bribe. According to the current legislation, a sum 500 or more times higher than an untaxed minimum wage is considered an especially big bribe.

The bill proposed to reduce this level to 300 untaxed minimum wages.

It also suggested increasing the sentence for taking big especially bribes.
