You're reading: Regions Party accuses opposition of trying to disrupt EU-Ukraine summit

Ukraine will continue to deepen its cooperation with the European Union, no matter what the governments opponents say, Regions Party MP Volodymyr Vecherko has said.

“Moreover, as far as I know, this year our cooperation with the EU will be of an even more applied character than in previous years,” the Regions Party’s press service quoted him as saying on Monday.

Vecherko said the opposition’s attempts to discredit Ukraine do no good to anybody.

“Unfortunately, our opponents often take more care of their own political interests than the interests of the state. Regardless of who occupies management positions, the current opposition is always trying to engage Europe as a ‘referee.’ It stretches back to the orange [revolution] times when they sorted out relations between each other,” he said.

He said that the “activity” of the opposition had been triggered by the impending EU-Ukraine summit.

“They used the information interest in Ukraine before the previous summit, tried to organize a boycott of Euro 2012 and are now working according to their old scenario. They don’t care that these actions affect not only the government, but also the whole country, its reputation and citizens, because the losses are sustained, first and foremost, by ordinary Ukrainians,” Vecherko said.

He also said that the opposition’s attempts to disrupt the EU-Ukraine summit would be in vain:

“Ukraine will not swerve from a path of European integration, despite attempts by some politicians to slow down this process in order to achieve their own goals.”

The EU-Ukraine summit is to be held in Brussels on Feb. 25.
