You're reading: Regions Party and People’s Party holding consultations on unification

Leader of the People's Party Volodymyr Lytvyn has refuted reports in Ukrainian media that last week he allegedly announced to the chairmen of the party's regional organizations that the People's Party was joining the Regions Party and he would become deputy chairman of the Regions Party. At the same time, Lytvyn said that the parties were holding consultations on the issue.

"The fact that such consultations are taking place is obvious. The rest of the information is absolutely not true," he said in an interview aired by Ukrainian television’s Channel 5 on the evening of Sept. 28.

Lytvyn said he thought the reports were aimed at disturbing members of the People’s Party. He also said that the state could benefit from the tempering of the Regions Party with the help of other political forces.

"Let’s face reality. The Regions Party is a reality of our political life, a long-term reality. The development of Ukraine will depend on this reality. Everyone wants the Regions Party to reflect the positions of the whole of Ukrainian society. If we’re talking about unification with the Regions Party, the People’s Party, which is the third largest in terms of membership after the Regions Party and the BYT, would benefit from it. If we become closer to the people, moderate the Regions Party – the country will benefit from it," Lytvyn said.
