You're reading: Regions Party hopes to pass bill cancelling deputy immunity in September

Ukraine's majority MPs are planning to put a bill on the cancellation of deputy immunity to a final vote in September, Head of the Regions Party parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov has said, according to the press service of the Regions Party.

“We have a bill which could be passed before the elections and
deprive all deputies of immunity. I think we should vote for the bill,”
Yefremov said, while commenting on the situation.

The politician said that MPs from the oppositional forces and the
profile committee are doing everything possible to avoid the vote on the
bill. He stressed that if the Verkhovna Rada backs the bill on July 5,
then the parliamentary majority could pass it at the beginning of
autumn.

“Meanwhile, the [opposition] are suggesting another option – to
submit once again a bill that mixes up immunity of the president,
deputies, and judges, and launch a big round knowing in advance what
decision the Constitutional Court will make,” Yefremov said.

According to him, the Regions Party will discuss the issue one more time and will not get involved in such a game.

“We will not play this game. We will insist on the adoption of our
bill on the cancellation of deputy immunity, and it will be fair to our
voters,” he added.

The parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held on October 28, 2012.
