You're reading: Regions Party says France applying double standards in Tymoshenko and Chirac cases

A statement by French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe regarding unfounded accusations against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is improper and does not meet the EU's constitutional norms, Regions Party MP Volodymyr Oliynyk has said.

"We are seeing double standards," the party’s press service quoted Oliynyk as saying.

"On the one hand, the trial of [former French President] Jacques Chirac is a surprise. After all, nobody makes any statements, and all waiting for a court ruling. Without interfering in their trials, they allow themselves to make statements about the judicial process in Ukraine.

"By the way, senior Russian officials have currently confirmed that the 2009 gas contracts are disadvantageous to Ukraine," he said.

He said that only the courts could confirm or drop the charges against the former prime minister.

As reported, Juppe stated earlier that if the EU and Ukraine sign the association agreement, its ratification would depend on the acquittal of Batkivschyna Party Leader and former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko.

"In our opinion, which reflects the viewpoint of the majority, the agreement cannot take effect if the Yulia Tymoshenko case does not have favorable results," the Batkivschyna Party’s press service quoted Juppe as saying.

The French foreign minister said he hoped the trial "would exculpate Yulia Tymoshenko from unreasonable charges."
