Svoboda Party activists held a protest outside the building of Zaporizhia Regional State Administration on Jan. 10 demanding that the regional authorities cancel the decision granting the regional status to the Russian language.

The press service of the Zaporizhia branch of the Svoboda Party reported that late on Jan. 10, several dozen activists of the party picketed the building of the regional administration for about an hour.

"Svoboda activists now conduct language protests on the eighth day of each month after Zaporizhia Regional Council on Sept. 8, 2010 took a decision granting the regional status to the Russian language. The current protest was moved to January 10 due to the Orthodox Christmas holidays," the press service said.

As reported, on Sept. 8, 2010, Zaporizhia Regional Council deputies took a decision granting the regional status to the Russian language. Thus, the regional council now can publish documents both in Ukrainian and Russian. The regional legislature proposed that village, town, city and district councils in Zaporizhia region also use Russian as a regional language.
