Ukrainian Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko has said that it is premature to conduct an extraordinary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine due to the arrest of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

"In order to conduct an extraordinary meeting, we should give an answer as to what questions we would like to consider at this meeting. If this is an attempt to resolve the problem with the responsibility of certain officials for what they did, while holding a certain post, then this should not be done," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Symonenko noted that "if illegal methods are used against [those arrested], then we are ready to protect the interests of these people."

He said that all people should be responsible for their actions, regardless of their political affiliation.

"Regions Party members, who are currently in power, should also be controlled with respect to how they use their powers," Symonenko said.

As reported, former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko was detained near his house on December 26. On December 27, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv ordered to arrest Lutsenko for two months.

The Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction proposed holding on December 31 an extraordinary meeting of parliament in order to hear Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka regarding "the use of criminal law in Ukraine with the aim of political persecution."
