The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) did not refuse Leader of the Front for Change Party Arseniy Yatseniuk permission to meet with former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko, as it does not have such a right.

"The PGO does not have the right to decide on permission for meetings with imprisoned people. Therefore, lawyers, relatives and friends of convicted people should address the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine for such permission. Respectively, the PGO never refused to let Yatseniuk meet with Tymoshenko, as it simply has no right to make such decisions," the press service of the PGO said on April 17.

The PGO said it also assisted in the organization of meetings of international human rights activists with Tymoshenko at their request, in the form of letters to the relevant agencies.

As reported earlier on Tuesday, the PGO on April 17 refused to grant permission to Arseniy Yatseniuk to meet with Yulia Tymoshenko. Yatseniuk said he believes that the refusal was politically motivated and aimed at disrupting the process of the unification of the opposition parties in Ukraine.

During the meeting, the leaders of the Front for Change and Batkivschyna parties planned to discuss the process of the unification of the opposition and reach a finally agreed format of participation in the parliamentary election in October 2012.
