You're reading: Thousands protest pro-Russia policy in Ukraine

About 3,000 demonstrators have gathered outside Ukraine's parliament to protest the recent agreement to extend the Russian navy's lease at a Ukrainian port.

Some 2,000 supporters of President Viktor Yanukovych and the bilateral agreement in turn surrounded parliament, aiming to keep the protesters from entering the building.

No violence was reported.

The agreement reached last month angered nationalists who regard the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s presence in the port of Sevastopol as tantamount to military occupation.

At Tuesday’s demonstration, opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko urged opponents of Yanukovych to conduct massive street protests to demand his resignation.
