President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has said that that European Union is concerned about the politicization of the Ukrainian courts.

"Our concern is connected with a certain politicization of the judicial system in Ukraine. The [former Ukrainian Premier Yulia] Tymoshenko case proves this," he said during the Ukraine-EU Summit in Kyiv on Monday.

The president of the European Council also expressed concern about freedom of speech and freedom of assembly in Ukraine.

According to him, these are the key principles for rapprochement of Ukraine and the EU and for the country’s further competitive and dynamic development.

Herman Van Rompuy added that it is very important to hold fair parliamentary elections under democratic standards within this context.
