Presidential candidate and Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko has called for urgent amendments to the constitution via the majority of the Verkhovna Rada after a survey or plebiscite is conducted.

"The Constitution of Ukraine must be amended. Those amendments introduced in 2005 destroyed the country’s system of government completely," she said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Tymoshenko said that neither she nor her faction voted for these amendments, as they considered them destructive to the country’s entire system of government.

"At present I think the same. That’s why I’m sure that the constitution must be urgently amended if we want our country to be strong and competitive in the world," she said.

Tymoshenko said the constitution should be amended after a survey or plebiscite on the form of government preferred by Ukraine’s citizens is conducted.

After this, a majority in the parliament is needed so as to amend the Constitution, Tymoshenko added.
