U.S. Attorney in the criminal case against Ukraine's former Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko, Martha Boersch, has said that former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko refused at the time to give testimony in Lazarenko's case.

"We have sent an official request for legal assistance to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Tymoshenko was called in for questioning. We came to Ukraine, Mrs. Tymoshenko arrived with her lawyer. But at the time she refused to answer our questions, so we were unable to obtain Tymoshenko’s testimony on the issues we were interested in," Boersch said on the Inter TV channel on Saturday evening.

When asked, how Tymoshenko explained her refusal to testify, the U.S. ex-attorney said: "As I recall, her lawyer referred to the constitutional provision – the right to remain silent in accordance with the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

Boersch also said she no longer worked in the U.S. Department of Justice.
