Leaders of the European Union and European politicians should show their support to Ukraine and ignore Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych at the Euro 2012 European Football Championship matches, Ukraine's jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko has said.

“By standing next to Yanukovych, or by just shaking his hand, you will help the authoritarian regime in Ukraine that takes away all rights and freedoms from citizens of my country… These time we need your support more than ever,” Tymoshenko said in a comment passed to CNN.

CNN reporter Phil Black, who visited Kharkiv to look into Tymoshenko’s case, said that the ex-premier was fighting Ukraine’s government from a hospital bed behind bars.

The ex-premier’s daughter Yevhenia Tymoshenko said that her mother was prepared to fight for her country despite her being maltreated in prison.
